As is well known, the salmon has a complicated life cycle – with terms like alevin, parr, smolt and grilse used to identify the different stages. The terms 'cock' and 'hen' – to identify male and female salmon respectively – would, on the other hand, appear to be used by anglers (and presumably farmers), rather than scientists.
